2009 Adelaide Hills Nebbiolo

This Nebbiolo was made ‘naturalmente’ with feet, love and courage. Picked on a fruit day on a waxing moon; destemed and foot trod by virgins; basket pressed to French oak hogsheads; matured sur lie for 20 months; bottled with minimal sulphur dioxide. Romanes eunt domus. Everything old is new again!

For labels as creative as the wines, we’re stoked to have the talented street artists of Melbourne’s Everfresh Studio composing the artwork for this series. Rone gives us his thoughts on this piece:
“Laced with Everfresh symbols this artwork epitomises our strong drive to always be at the forefront with our artwork, but never forgetting the work of those who inspired us. This piece references the golden age of design, when so much detail was put purely into layout and type to make words look as if they are almost musical.”

First Drop, Home of the Brave Nebbiolo 2009 Adelaide Hills

Much paler than the Big Blind and with a bricky rim but then it is a good deal older. This has the most glorious aromas of mature Nebbiolo. There’s mature red fruit, a touch of leather and dried cherry, perhaps tomato too – actually hard to describe. On the palate it is very fluid but with some tannin on the finish, a fine Italian bite of freshness alongside that tannic kick but all enfolded in the mature aromas and flavours. Bravo! Has many of the qualities of a good Barolo – elegance, perfume and a fine framework – and just a little more richness of fruit than you might typically find in Piemonte. (JH)

First Drop Wines Home Of The Brave Nebbiolo 2009

Foot stomped is proudly emblazoned on the hip looking bottle (thanks to Everfresh Studios in Melbourne), and is seemingly integral in the making of this wine. Feet and grapes. Good stuff. Released as a mature-ish wine, which is kind of nice too. Always interesting checking in with what the First Drop boys are doing.

Rust through garnet colour. Love that in nebbiolo. Fruity and savoury at once in the bouquet. Shows some maturity in dusty spice scents, mellow old wood characters, but offers up black cherry and and pot pourri too. In the palate, juicy, dark in fruit character, touch chocolatey (or at least mocha powder), builds in tannin and finishes a bit fumey as it fans out through the mouth. There’s a rustic edge that creeps in too. Likeable, and not wanting for character.
