Not a sledgehammer style, this Barossa Shiraz is made for drinking! Soft, slurpy and textured it is balanced with good acidity, which refreshes the palate and makes you go back for a second / third glass. The wine is matured sur lie for 12 months in 3 and 4 year old French oak hogsheads.

The aromas and flavors of plums, smoked meat, raw meat, cloves, nutmeg and berries are sumptuous. Full body, round and polished tannins and a flavorful finish. Yet reserved and focused at the finish. Drink or hold.

Deep garnet rather than purple colour. Savoury - almost umami leanings to the bouquet: spice, mushrooms and truffles. Time in the glass shows more cinnamon and plum. Medium-weight on the palate, just enough fruit, balanced.

Soft on the oak and extraction so you can slam it down fast. Barossa Shiraz for Solo Men. This is a drink! Mainlines the soft, pillowy generosity of warm climate fruit with a brightness and general sense of slurpy, sweet but dry finishing fruit character. Pepper over black and red berries, light jammy touch but that is sorted out by a light smudge of tannin and brisk acidity. Batten down the hatches!

Generous, with a plump mix of huckleberry and blackberry flavors, revealing a hint of green olive on a dense and juicy frame. Notes of black walnut and dried ginger emerge on the supple finish. Drink now through 2029. — M.W.

A fresh shiraz showing notes of blueberries, pressed violets , slate, spices and dried herbs. Medium body, a compact and minerally package of firm tannins and a driven finish.

Appealing and aromatic up front, with rosemary, thyme and sage details to the restrained flavors of cranberry and raspberry at the core. Elegant, fresh and smooth, finishing juicy. Drink now through 2028. Nb. 2016 marked 5 consecutive vintages of Mother's Milk in Wine Spectator's coveted "Smart Buys" feature.

Deep red/purple colour with a spicy aroma and flavour, some walnutty influences and a medium-bodied, intense and finely-honed palate. It finishes with a little firmness from tannin and warmth from alcohol. Nicely balanced, though. A stylish wine, already drinking well and with future potential. A very tasty glass of shiraz. At this price, it's great value.

Aromas of tar and spice with plenty of fruit follow through to a medium to full body, with juicy fruit and a long and flavorful finish. This is balanced and fine-grained. Drink now. Screw cap.

Juicy and vivid, bursting with cherry and cranberry flavors that are smooth and generous. Hints of vanilla and mocha smooth out the details, finishing supple and creamy. Drink now through 2028. -MW

Deep crimson. Rich in spicy dark fruit, more black cherry than cassis, with just a hint of eucalyptus and sweet spice. There’s dark chocolate on the palate and tannins that are disconcertingly fine, cutting through all that fruit depth to create something far more elegant than I expected initially. Long, fresh, spicy finish. Great finesse for a big wine. (JH)
