2015 ‘The Cream’ Barossa Valley Shiraz

April 2019,, Mike Bennie, 94 points

The combo of the single vineyard Fat Of The Land wines (I think)*, sees Greenock, Seppeltsfield and Ebenezer blended up in French and to a lesser extent American oak. Long oak maturation (20 months or so) too. The top of the First Drop tree.

Strong bouquet of ripe forest berries, char, sweet spice, vanilla, mocha. The palate is slippery and so very concentrated, dark fruit jostling with sweet spice and chocolate. There’s so much depth and concentration here but it doesn’t feel heavy, more pillowy and seriously slippery, a mass of molten fruit, oak and spice lava that stains everything in its path. Feels so seamless too. It’s such a rich wine as well. Balance is good here with barely a hair out of place, just a faint trill of sherbetty acidity to close. Impressive in its style.

Deep red colour with a tinge of purple. The bouquet is alcohol-lifted and rich in dark chocolate and mocha, with some regional ironstone and metallic notes. The palate is concentrated and powerful, very intense and driving. A very full-bodied, dense, powerful shiraz, with amazing persistence and mouth-coating tannins. A massive, ripping shiraz.

A deep, dark well of flavour. One sip and you sink into its inky depths. It tastes of cocoa and coffee, licorice and blackberry, a lift of raspberry and violet-like like character showing through the finish. Clearly it's at the (very) big end of town but the fruit is of monumental proportion and it somehow manages to feel tied down and neat.

A blend of the best barrels in the cellar, First Drop's 2015 The Cream Shiraz lives up to its name, easily besting the single-vineyard offerings—at least on this day. It's 52% Ebenezer, 35% Greenock and 13% Seppeltsfield, offering a sexy array of dark fruit flavors, a touch of raspberry, and a plush but not overbearing coating of cedar and vanilla-tinged oak.

Rich, dark and dense, this expressive and generous red opens with smoke, sandalwood and black walnut aromas and a core of thick, fleshy black cherry, raspberry and plum flavors. Cinnamon, licorice and black tea grace notes emerge on the velvety and harmonious finish. Shows tremendous depth and polish. Drink now through 2028.
